Mama’s Joint: Mama Summer 2008

Monday, May 12th, 2008

mama clothing

For the summer 2008 collection Mama takes you back to the Roaring 20’s when smoke-filled speakeasys and jazz clubs were the place to get a cocktail during Prohibition. A time when flappers were chopping their hair into bobs and hiking their skirts up and showing their ankles – so scandalous! Mama celebrates this exciting period and gives it a contemporary twist. The Mama’s Joint Look Book is laid out like a silent film and was shot at Milk Bar in San Francisco to give it that “secret spot” feel. You can view the Look Book here. Sit back, relax and turn the listen to all that jazz.
As usual, this is a group effort and I want to give special thanks to Amanda Lopez, Liz Baca, Jorge Magallon, Lexx Valdez, Milk Bar, and the lovely ladies Ashley, Candee, Mayra and Reina.

Another Day, Another Photo Shoot

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

This past Sunday we had another Mama photoshoot to take pictures of our second spring delivery. The usual ladies came out to play: Busy Lady Baca, Amanda Lopez, Reina Reina, Myra, Candee and Ashley. We shot “on location” and not “in the kitchen” and Erik from MILK SF was nice enough to let us use his spot for the shoot. The line is roaring 1920’s/flapper/art deco/prohibition/jazz inspired so we want to shoot in a bar to give it that “speak easy” feel.

These shoots all start the same way - 6 am in Mama’s Kitchen. That gives us time to have breakfast, do hair, make-up and fittings. The most fun part is when Liz comes with The Goods! . . .
The shoe line-up

Fur stoles for the sophisticated ladies

Silk flowers to add here & there

Cloche hats

Glitzy Baubles

Leather gloves and feather earrings

And last but not least, lacy underthings

Ok, back to the kitchen where breakfast, hair & makeup are happening. Oh, and meet Jorge on makeup!

{We interrupt this blog post to let you know that all the photos below were taken by none other than, drumroll please . . . ONE HIT WONDER!!}

Black nails for everyone courtesy of Juicy Mama Nail Paint

Once everyone was ready, went to MILK and met Amanda

Did some final touch-ups while there

And then smiled pretty for the camera

It was a very tiring 14 hour day but we got through it. Stay tuned for the drop.

All In A Few Weeks Time

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I’ve been meaning to post these pictures for a minute but Mama has kept me busy. This is where you’ll find me most of the time - and usually in the yawning position . . .

And this is what I look at most of the time . . .

You may recall a few weeks back we announced that DJ Zita, DJ Neta and Pam the Funkstress had started a new female DJ collective called “Bay Area Sistah Sound” with a monthly party at Milk. Even though the first party was the night before our photoshoot (with a 6 am call time) a few of us were there to support.
The ladies had people lined up outside. . .

DJ Zita on deck . . .

The place was packed . . . congrats to the ladies!

I called it an early night to get ready for the Spring shoot. Next morning at 6 am the ladies started filtering in. The crew consisted of: Candee, Mayra, Reina, Ashley, Liz, Amanda and Christine. And of course Ali and I were there.

Christine doing Candee’s makeup - Candee still in PJs . . .

All the makeup . . .

Lots of primping . . .

Me in my usual spot . . .

Ashley getting makeup done . . .

Candee’s man Juan came out to support. Ali kept him busy watching Colors.

M.I.S.S. Liz was in full effect with her goods!

Hello vintage Nike cortez-esque slip-on amazingness . . .

More shoes . . .

Mama shoots always involve a heavy does of gold!

Amanda came by later in the morning and we met about the different shots we had to get, the location, etc.

We got to the spot and set up a little “changing room” area for ourselves and got the show on the road!

Juan was guarding the changing room . . .

It wouldn’t be a photoshoot if Liz was not sticking her hands up someone pants/skirt . .

Saw a few ladybugs that day - they bring good luck and it was evident in the pictures.

I really do . . .

And then back to the desk. My days begin, occur and end in this place . . .

Stay tuned for spring any day now!

This past Sunday we shot the Spring 1 Lookbook. We took some video and photos of the behind the scenes and I’ll be posting them throughout the week. Here’s a video of Ashley being shot by Amanda Lopez and styled by Liz Baca on the beach in San Francisco.
